Designed by John George Robinson and manufactured in Ballaarat, Victoria, in 1871, the Ballaarat (from Aboriginal balla arat – resting place) was the first engine to be manufactured in the southern hemisphere for a 3ft 6in gauge, as well as being the first locomotive to operate in Western Australia. Purchased by the W.A. Timber Company in 1871, the train was dismantled and packed in crates in Melbourne then transported by ship to the jetty at Wonnerup at a cost of £780.
